If you have citations for all of your opinions on a subject, you shouldn't talk about it.

If you have citations for all of your opinions on a subject, you shouldn't talk about it.  Just give me the citations, I'll look them up myself.  If you have something to say from your own thoughts, I'll listen to that.

In academia for students in most classes, if you write a paper and say an original thought without citations, professors will give you a bad grade.  They don't just discourage original thinking, they prohibit it.  I have had to attribute original thoughts to anyone who has said something similar or even dissimilar if i can't find anyone.  It's an awful practice.  People begin to think that citations are proof and evidence, often they are not.  I was also surprised to find in college that many academics cannot discuss something new and interesting.  They don't know what your talking about because they haven't read about it and memorized it.  You can say, "I'm talking directly to you right now about new things, could you just discuss it with me."  Many are not able to do that.  The have no original thoughts and can't hold a conversation about something new.  They produce students who are the same way.

  1. that is not the case in the Oxford educational model. that is not the case in APA standards, which are used by most social scientists in america and in england.
